Detroit Steel has moved from a potential weapon to protect countries to a video game played on smart phones. However, in the Detroit Steel app, you aren’t Detroit Steel, but the air support that follows him around. Unknown to the players, they are actually controlling drones that lay down cover while Detroit Steel carries out his orders. So what we have is a big iron throwdown with the Detroit Steel mech and his drones on one side, and Iron Man, War Machine, and Rescue on the other side. Eventually, Tony finds out that the drones are able to target them using their repulsor energy. War Machine and Rescue shut down, which gives Pepper Potts only fifteen minutes of life left before her heart stops, while Tony leads the drones away to take them on in a less populated area.
I’ve seen some comments regarding the lack of Iron Man in this current arc, but I’ve stood by liking the heavy Tony Stark story. I know Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca can do more with their talents than just having a bunch of talking heads, but it’s good to see Stark the man, the genius, and the business man to balance the story. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: How many times do we really need to see Iron Man blowing stuff up when there is a character inside that is more interesting than the armor he wears.
That being said, it is good to see Iron Man back in action in a big way. As good as it is to see that person inside the armor doing his thing, there comes a time to put that armor on and go to work. To me, it’s all about balance. When there is a good balance between the hero and his normal persona, a story can be great. With this being part 8 of the current arc, it doesn’t mean we needed four total issues of Iron Man balanced with four issues of Stark. A truly well-written character will save the action for when the situation comes to a climax and not willy nilly to solve every problem. Iron Man can’t make Stark Resilient a successful start up company. Only Tony Stark can do that.
But Tony Stark can’t handle Detroit Steel. That’s a job for Iron Man and he does plan on doing that job well.
There is a short story that follows the regular full length story. This has Pepper being visited by her deceased husband, Happy Hogan. However, it isn’t actually Happy. It’s really her J.A.R.V.I.S. AI that is coming to her to warn of the possible dangers of being a superhero. Does this spell ultimate doom for Pepper? Doubtful, but it does leave us at the edge of our seats as we watch her time dwindle.
One thing I’m a bit uncertain of, and hope is explained a little better in the conclusion, is the brashness of the attack on Stark. The world knows about Detroit Steel and that Justine and Sasha Hammer are behind it. The world also probably knows they have a bone to pick with Stark, but why is the guy inside the armor so dead set on killing Stark? Why wouldn’t people be a little curious about the mech attacking Stark for nothing but unveiling a new type of car? If they plan on blaming it on terrorists, wouldn’t that put some serious concern on the security of such a deadly device?
